Research Shows Nearly Half Of Black Women In California Face

The California Black Women’s Collective Empowerment Institute has released a new study on the quality of life for Black women in the state. The study found that two out of five black women in California are financially insecure due to their meager paychecks.

the study investigated There are over 1,000 black women across California. It was revealed that 37% of them hold two or more jobs. Her 62% of these women said a side hustle was “essential” and that they “wouldn’t be able to make a living” without it.

The survey also found that two in five black women face difficulty covering basic expenses. 80% find it difficult to cope with inflation and rising costs of living, 66% find it difficult to cope with stress and 53% say finding financial resources is a concern.

The California Black Women’s Collective Empowerment Institute serves as a vehicle to amplify the voices, expertise, and issues of Black women across the state. The study is part of the institute’s efforts to improve the structures that impact the lives of Black women and girls across the state. Kelly Todd Griffin, the institute’s CEO, spoke about the findings at a press conference.

Top priorities for black women

“These findings are sobering and highlight the pressures that threaten Black women’s stability and economic security,” Griffin said. “This data is a call to action for policymakers, advocates, and community leaders to drive meaningful change to address these pressing issues and disparities.”

When asked about their top policy priorities that affect living conditions in California, Black women cited several needs. 88% mentioned equal pay for equal work compared to men and women from other backgrounds. 86% want to prioritize the need for affordable housing, 85% want to increase efforts to protect Black women and girls from violence, and 84% want to prioritize the need for affordable housing. We want to expand access to affordable health care.
